The Bumble Beginning
It was a typical Thursday, 7th March 2024, when Tobob matched with SP on Bumble. Her profile was a delightful mix of wit and charm, featuring a hilarious meme about cats and a picture of her in a Renaissance fair costume. Swipe right!
SP’s first message was, “Ever tried to mix Shakespeare and stand-up comedy?” Tobob, intrigued, responded, “To be punny or not to be punny, that is the question!” Her laughter-filled reply set the tone for what was to come.
The Messaging Marathon
Over the next few days, their conversation was a rollercoaster of humour and deep discussions. They traded jokes, shared funny anecdotes, and talked about their favourite comedians.
After some playful back-and-forth, they finally set a date. Tobob planned a night that promised endless laughter and a touch of old-school charm.
The First Date
Friday, 22nd March 2024, arrived.
The evening began at a comedy club known for its open mic nights. Tobob and SP arrived early to snag good seats. The show was a hit, with both of them laughing until their sides hurt. Inspired by the performances, Tobob decided to sign up for a surprise open mic slot, intending to impress SP with his wit.
The Disaster
Tobob’s turn on stage started strong, but halfway through his set, he accidentally knocked over the microphone stand, which in turn toppled a tray of drinks. The audience gasped as the tray’s contents splashed over a nearby table, soaking its occupants. The room fell silent as Tobob tried to salvage his routine, but the damage was done.
To make matters worse, the club manager wasn’t amused and asked Tobob to leave. SP, being the good sport she was, suggested they move on to the next part of the evening, but the awkwardness lingered.
Tobob had planned dinner at an elegant restaurant known for its romantic ambiance. Unfortunately, his clumsy moment at the club seemed to have set the tone for the rest of the night. At dinner, Tobob accidentally spilled wine on SP’s dress, and in a misguided attempt to help, knocked over a candle, singeing the tablecloth.
The Goodbye
As the evening came to an end, Tobob walked SP to her taxi. He handed her a small token he’d prepared—a charm bracelet with a tiny microphone charm, meant to symbolize their shared love of comedy. SP accepted it with a strained smile, clearly ready for the night to be over.
With an awkward hug and a quick goodbye, they parted ways. Tobob watched the taxi drive off, hoping that despite the disasters, SP would remember the laughter they shared. He never heard back.
